March out Racism

Feedback and reflections on the #marchoutracism display in the Education & Music Library

March 21st was designated by the United Nations (UN) as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. As part of this day, the Education & Music Library participated in a provincial campaign on the theme “Show Racism the Door”. We used a resource kit provided by the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan to decorate the entrance to the library during the month of March. We also collected feedback and reflections on the subject from library visitors.

The March 21 Campaign was initiated to heighten awareness of the harmful effects of racism on a national scale and to clearly demonstrate the commitment and leadership of the Government of Canada to foster respect, equality and diversity. It is a day observed worldwide to focus attention on the problems of racism and to promote racial harmony. Celebrating pride in the Education & Music Library

It’s that time of year again – Saskatoon Pride! The folks in the Education & Music Library are celebrating Pride along with many other organizations in Saskatoon. To celebrate, we’ve chosen to highlight some representative titles from our collections along the theme of fostering community pride, gender diversity, and inclusion. Shoutout to Tina, who put this display together along with MaryLynn. We’re also happy to see that the University of Saskatchewan will be marching in the pride parade this year for the first time. If you’re there – you may see some of our branch staff marching as well!

The recent display in the Education & Music Library features books that were used in Saskatchewan classrooms as part of the 1964 curriculum. Participants in the Biennial Conference of the Canadian History of Education Association (CHEA) will be meeting in Saskatoon from October 23 – 26 and touring the Education & Music Library to learn more about the Historical Textbook Collection that is housed on site.

The display was curated by Education & Music Library staff.

Defining a quiet study area in the Education & Music Library

Here at the Education & Music Library, we have been working on defining designated zones for quiet study. We identified the back corner of the Library (beside the Historical Textbook Collection) as the best area for this and developed posters to notify library users that the space is meant for quiet study only.
