Best Wishes Justine

Today is Miss Justine Eritz’s last day of work before her wedding on Saturday. When she comes back to the Murray Library next week, she will be a married lady named Mrs. Justine Sturgeon.

To send Justine off, her Murray Library coworkers threw her a mini surprise wedding shower. There was food, games, and lots of fun. Even without our social committee director’s input, I think we managed a pretty good party! Thanks to everyone who brought potluck items, decorated, and prepared the games.

We wish you all the best, Justine, on your wedding day, and throughout the many years of wedded bliss that are sure to come!

Everyone was well-fed!

Mini Golf!

The 2nd annual Murray Library Mini Golf Tournament was held at Putt n’Bounce yesterday evening. The event was followed by a burger dinner at Fuddruckers.

This year’s event was a rousing success, with 16 participants in the tournament. However, there can only be one winner, and that winner is:

DUANE

Congratulations Duane, on winning for the second year in a row! Duane had the lowest score, an impressive 38 strokes (and 3 holes in one in a row!). Honourable mention goes to Angie, with a second-place score of 42.

Just like there’s only one winner, there can only be one loser. This year’s worst score was also a repeat from last year:

AMY

Congratulations, Amy, on winning the worst score trophy for the second year in a row! Amy had the highest score by two points, at 64 strokes, and no holes in one.

Will someone else be able to unseat our champions next year and win the tin foil trophies? Stay tuned!

Miscellaneous Murray Updates

What’s been going on in Murray lately? Despite the end of term, we’re still busy bees here. Too busy to remember to do Branching Out posts. 🙂

  • We’ve extended our summer hours!
  • Spring Session has begun, and we’ll be offering drop-in tours of the Murray Library this week and next week. Do you know of anyone new to campus who would be interested in a tour? More details can be found on the Murray Info page of the Tours Guide.
  • If you didn’t get the chance to visit the Take a Break with Us room in the Murray Library, check out the photos we’ve uploaded on our Facebook page (no need to have a Facebook account to see them!)
  • We’re hosting a Sask Polytech student for the next 3 weeks. Blaynne will be learning all about circulation, interlibrary loans, stack maintenance, and some reference.
  • Jo Ann has moved over to her new office in Student Learning Services… It’s strange seeing that empty desk. Good thing that she’s not too far away!

Babies are here!

Congratulations to Rachel H. from the Murray Library on the birth of her two new babies yesterday afternoon! Rachel, baby boy Ethan, and baby girl Robin are all doing well.

Staff members at the Murray Library had a baby pool going to guess the birthday and weights of the babies. Congratulations to Christine who was the overall winner with the closest date, and to Racheal and Eva who picked the closest girl & boy weights. IMG585  baby pool
Murray Library staff are collecting to buy a gift for Rachel and her family. If you’d like to contribute, please drop by the Interlibrary Loans department.

ILL: finally at full capacity

For the first time in a long time, the Interlibrary Loans department at the Murray Library is fully staffed. Donna has returned from her term position on the 6th floor, and Iffat will be covering Rachel H’s maternity leave. Here’s our current colour-coordinated crew:

4 women sitting on chairs and smiling.

Christine (supervisor), Racheal, Donna and Iffat

Contact any of these ladies for all of your (non-health-sci) interlibrary loan needs. They can be found in room 122 of the Murray Library. These multi-talented staff members also help out at the Murray Library’s check-out desk and reference desk.

Can you guess whose beautiful cat-covered desk this is?

Happy Halloween!

The ULC and University Library’s pumpkin decorating competition was a great success! Thank-you to everyone who participated, either by decorating or carving a pumpkin, or by coming by and voting. Students and staff were continuously stopping by, looking at the pumpkins, voting, and even taking pictures. In total, we had 189 votes cast, a huge turnout.

Halloween 2014 092

Congratulations to Lara and Amy, who received the most votes for their pumpkin by a landslide (we swear, we didn’t cheat much).

Halloween 2014 089

2nd place went to the Library Peer Mentors.

Halloween 2014 090

3rd place went to Donna from the ULC.

There were also many library and ULC employees who dressed up in Halloween costumes today. Lots of fun was had by all.

ULC and University Library Pumpkin Carving Contest

Happy Halloween!

The Library and ULC’s pumpkin decorating contest is happening now! Come visit the display of cute, spooky, strange and scary pumpkins, all created by your co-workers. The display is located on the 1st floor of the Murray Library, next to the reference desk. Can you guess who made each pumpkin?

You can vote for your favourite pumpkin anytime today or tomorrow by putting an entry in our ballot box. The winning individual or team will be announced on Friday, Halloween Day.

A big thanks to Erin and Donna from the ULC and Lara, Justine and Amy (the Murray Social Committee) for putting this together.

It’s the Great Pumpkin (Food Day) Charlie Brown

On Wednesday, October 8th, staff members of the Murray Library celebrated a Pumpkin Food Day. The theme was pumpkin: pumpkin flavoured (cake, cookies, mousse, more cookies), pumpkin-coloured (Doritos, Cheezies, candy corn, pretzel thingies) and pumpkin-shaped (cheese ball) foods were all welcome.

(Eva’s famous mushroom tarts, while neither pumpkin-flavoured, -coloured nor -shaped, as always welcome.)

The pièce de resistance was a ginormous 3-layer pumpkin spice cake with cream cheese icing made by Justine.

As you can see, the people who work in Murray Client Services are really into pumpkin. We are officially throwing down the gauntlet to the rest of the library – can you beat us at the pumpkin decorating contest two weeks from now? We think not.

Pumpkin Decorating Contest!

Your colleagues from Murray Client Services and the University Learning Centre invite you to join us in a pumpkin decorating competition! Who will have the best pumpkin? Which department will claim the top prize?

Note: The U of S Horticulture Club is selling pumpkins this week!
Thursday October 9th from 10 am to 3 pm in the Bowl
Friday October 10th from 9 am to 4 pm in the Horticulture Field Lab

Here’s how it works:

  • Individuals or teams of up to 4-5 people can enter.
  • Please let Lara, Justine, Erin or Donna know you intend to decorate a pumpkin by Monday, October 20th so that we know how much display space we’ll need.
  • You provide your own pumpkin of any size (within reason – no county fair prize winners for Biggest Pumpkin Ever).
  • You can carve and/or decorate a pumpkin however you’d like. Be creative! Don’t break any Occupational Health and Safety rules!
  • Pumpkins will be displayed on the 1st floor of Murray alongside a Halloween book display.
  • Bring your pumpkin into the Murray Library on the morning of October 29th. Stop by the Reference Desk on the 1st floor where you can register your pumpkin. Each pumpkin will get a number, so that voting remains somewhat anonymous and impartial.
  • Pumpkins will stay up on October 29th and 30th while people vote for their favourite one. Anyone – staff, students – can vote.
  • The votes will be tallied at the end of day October 30th and the winner will be announced on October 31st, Halloween Day.
  • Winners get glory, bragging rights, and/or pictures of their pumpkin posted on social media.
