Copyright: The Card Game!

Do you remember that old Shakespeare quote, “To study or not to study copyright, that is the question”? Well, maybe it wasn’t him and instead was something Cathy said when we were talking about playing “Copyright: The Card Game!”.

But, I digress. In honour of Fair Dealing/Fair Use Week that happens annually during the last week of February in Canada and the United States, the Copyright Office hosted five teams to duke it out in a friendly game of who knows the most about copyright. It was kind of like Crossfit® and who can exercise the fastest. Rumour has it that many of the teams pulled all-nighters and diligently scoured the USask copyright website for hints, tips and other advantages. While noshing on Skittles (#DYK they have been in North America since 1979) and peanut butter M&Ms (which Kate accidentally bought instead of normal M&Ms), to a carefully curated 80s Spotify playlist, teams passionately hovered over their cards in hopes to answer the copyright questions posed by Kate. Critical thinking and the highly competitive nature (who knew!?) of library staff helped bring out the copyright ringers on each team (I’m looking at you Myles!).

At the end of the game, after some well-argued-for bonus points had been awarded, we had to go to a tie-breaker between the Legal Eagles and BrainSTEMS!. BrainSTEMS! edged out the Legal Eagles by milliseconds on the squeezing of the squeaky toy to give the correct answer. Congratulations to Team BrainSTEMs! on their inaugural win!

Thank you to all who attended and supported this event – Team TBD ©, Circulation Formation, The Infringers, Legal Eagles and BrainSTEMS! We look forward to seeing you for the second annual Copyright: The Card Game event!

March out Racism

Feedback and reflections on the #marchoutracism display in the Education & Music Library

March 21st was designated by the United Nations (UN) as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. As part of this day, the Education & Music Library participated in a provincial campaign on the theme “Show Racism the Door”. We used a resource kit provided by the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan to decorate the entrance to the library during the month of March. We also collected feedback and reflections on the subject from library visitors.

The March 21 Campaign was initiated to heighten awareness of the harmful effects of racism on a national scale and to clearly demonstrate the commitment and leadership of the Government of Canada to foster respect, equality and diversity. It is a day observed worldwide to focus attention on the problems of racism and to promote racial harmony. Tina and MaryLynn at the Education & Music Library have been hard at work creating eye-catching displays to highlight National Aboriginal Day and Ramadan. With such a wealth of materials to draw upon, it is no easy feat!

These displays never fail to inform and inspire. Come by and check them out!

Celebrating pride in the Education & Music Library

It’s that time of year again – Saskatoon Pride! The folks in the Education & Music Library are celebrating Pride along with many other organizations in Saskatoon. To celebrate, we’ve chosen to highlight some representative titles from our collections along the theme of fostering community pride, gender diversity, and inclusion. Shoutout to Tina, who put this display together along with MaryLynn. We’re also happy to see that the University of Saskatchewan will be marching in the pride parade this year for the first time. If you’re there – you may see some of our branch staff marching as well!

The recent display in the Education & Music Library features books that were used in Saskatchewan classrooms as part of the 1964 curriculum. Participants in the Biennial Conference of the Canadian History of Education Association (CHEA) will be meeting in Saskatoon from October 23 – 26 and touring the Education & Music Library to learn more about the Historical Textbook Collection that is housed on site.

The display was curated by Education & Music Library staff.
