Why we need global action on cryospheric hazard

The glacier ice and rock avalanche which took place in Nepal on 26 August 2026 generated a cascading mass flow that devastated the Nepal-China border corridor. The UN Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences (2025-2034) led by UNESCO has a role to play in preventing such disasters calling for stronger cryospheric science and monitoring, international cooperation, and action to build resilience to cryospheric change and its impacts.
