Extreme Temperatures!

Well it’s Winter in Saskatchewan and over the past few days we have experienced record breaking temperatures such as -50 with the wind chill! In order to protect ourselves from these extreme temperatures we need to take the following safety precautions…

First, Try and keep the amount of time that you spend outside to an absolute minimal. In these temperatures it may only takes up to three minutes to develop frostbite on open skin.
If you must go outside please take these precautions to protect yourself from frostbite and Hypothermia:
1. Dress Warmly – Wear layers of warm clothing, mittens, boots and a hat. Hats are important because a lot of body heat is lost from the head. When the wind chill is high, try to cover as much exposed skin as possible.
2. Stay Dry – Wet clothing cools the body rapidly. Remove outer layers of clothing or open your coat if you are sweating.
3. Keep Active – Walking or running will help keep you warm by generating body heat.
4. Drink Warm Fluids – Warm fluids help the body maintain its temperature. If warm drinks are not available, drink water. Avoid caffeine and alcohol which will cause
the body’s core temperature to drop.
5. Know Your Limits – Some people are more susceptible to the cold, particularly children, the
elderly and those with circulation problems. Listen to your body and warm
up when needed.
Drive only if it is absolutely necessary. If you must drive, consider the following:
1. Try to Travel in the day, don’t travel alone, and keep others informed of your schedule. Stay on main
roads; avoid back road shortcuts.
2. If you get stuck…
Stay with your car. Do not try to walk to safety.
Start the car and use the heater for about 10 minutes every hour. Keep the exhaust pipe clear so
fumes won’t back up in the car.
Leave the overhead light on when the engine is running so that you can be seen.
As you sit, keep moving your arms and legs to keep blood circulating and to stay warm.
Keep one window away from the blowing wind slightly open to let in air.
