Winter is Coming

Sorry, this isn’t a post about Game of Thrones! However, we do have a spoiler alert for you: Winter is coming, and Protective Services and SGI want you to be prepared for winter driving:

“You don’t know exactly when winter’s coming and it happens very quickly when it does come,” said Ryan Jacobson, CEO of the Saskatchewan Safety Council. “The challenge is that drivers have to adapt driving behaviours very quickly, sometimes within a day or overnight.”

SGI: “With snow and colder temperatures on the horizon, throughout November police across the province will be on the lookout for people driving too fast for road conditions. From November 2013 to March 20141, driving too fast for road conditions was cited as a contributing factor in 1,511 collisions in Saskatchewan, resulting in seven deaths and 617 injuries.”

Campus Incident: Theft of Canadian Flag (Seeking Tips)

Sometime during the night of July 17-18, 2015, unknown persons accessed the roof of the Thorvaldson Building and after forcefully removing the Canadian Flag from the mast station located there, positioned a Molson Pilsner Saskatchewan Roughrider Flag in its place.

In perpetrating this dangerous and reckless act, the persons effectively desecrated an emblem used for many years by the University of Saskatchewan to honor the memory of deceased faculty, staff, students and other distinguished people. They also damaged University of Saskatchewan property to the extent where expensive repair was necessitated.

If you have any information which might assist us in identifying the persons, please contact Protective Services at 306-966-5555.

Campus Incident: Theft from ATM

Choosing the Right Bike Lock

Although no bicycle lock is invincible, it doesn’t make sense to leave your expensive bicycle on campus secured with an inexpensive lock. A general rule is that you should spend at least 10% of the value of your bicycle on your locking system. Also, when you plan to leave your bike locked for a long period of time or in a high-risk area, use TWO locks, not one, as this will make thieves less likely to steal your bike as they will search for an easier target.

The highest security locks resemble the images below – U-Locks or Chain-Locks are generally the best you can get.

Cable locks, like the one below, are very common but are also the weakest of the locks. While lighter and easier to use than the heavy-duty locks above, they can be cut with the simplest of tools making them a favourite for would-be thieves.

On campus, cable locks should be reserved for use in tandem with a high security lock like that above, and not as your only locking solution.

Also, remember that “Quick Release” means quick release, so if your bike is equipped with quick release skewers as below, unsecured tires and seats may go missing.

Protect yourself by securing your wheels and your frame together with multiple locks, bring your tires and seat with you, or replace your quick release skewers with something lockable.

Always remember to record your bicycle’s Serial Number in case it is stolen; it will be required for Protective Services to be able to add it to the police database so it can be recovered. Without a serial number, the chances of finding your stolen bike are very low.

If your bike has gone missing, or for other advice, please contact Protective Services at 306-966-5555.
