USSU & SSAIC -Coalition Against Sexual and Gender Based Violence

First Meeting: Tentatively September 29th

Demanding Change, Uniting Community is a two-term, community-based initiative led by SSAIC and the USSU through a Coalition Against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence. This collaborative project brings together students, community members, and campus leaders to address sexual and gender-based violence through advocacy, education, action, and community outreach.

In Fall Term, participants will volunteer directly with SSAIC to learn and support community outreach initiatives around  Saskatoon. This may include attending presentations, information fairs, and community outreach activities that support the SSAIC. Students will learn about sexualized violence, child sexual abuse, consent education, trauma-informed care, and how to teach about sexualized violence. Throughout the term, there will be checkpoints with the USSU’s advocacy committee to report both about experiences and insights. It is anticipated that student volunteers will commit to between 1 and 3 hours of volunteer time a week. However, this is flexible.

In Winter Term, volunteers will work alongside the University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union (USSU) and SSAIC to develop and present recommendations to the USSU Advocacy Committee based on community outreach initiatives on campus and through meeting with student groups and individuals. This work is aimed at strengthening sexual violence prevention and response on campus. Additionally, it is the intent of this term for students to be able to focus on cultivating staff and faculty awareness and commitment to advancing conversations that bring attention to sexual and gender-based violence prevention on campus. Through applying insight gained in the fall, students will be better equipped to tackle university issues and landscapes of sexual violence awareness.

This project is a volunteer position that will support community engagement as well as the creation of a recommendations report discussing the experiences had in both the community and campus environment and suggestions for framing a campus response to sexual and gender-based violence that is also accountable to the intersections of our Saskatoon community.

Students will be able to gain volunteer experience in community and learn valuable skills of engagement, advocacy. Additionally, volunteers will acquire deeper knowledge of the impacts of sexual violence, tools for support, and language pertaining to sexual violence and sexual assault.

We will be able to accept between 8 and 10 students to be a part of this project. If you are not selected as a volunteer, there are still opportunities on campus, through the USSU, and in the community to get involved with.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Emma Wintermute (she/her) president@ussu.ca or Morgan Price (she/they) mprice@ssaic.ca
