#USaskVotes is a campus-wide voter engagement campaign brought to you by the University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union.  We are firmly committed to democracy and recognize that every single vote counts, especially considering that there are more than 2,000,000 undergraduate students in Canada.  Students have a powerful voice that can and should be brought to bear on Canada’s political leaders, no matter which party they represent.

The goals of the campaign are:

  1. To showcase the overall importance of voting and voter participation.
  2. To make voting engaging so that students will take the time to cast their ballot.

Calling All Student Leaders

This is your chance to make a difference on campus!

U of S students create an energetic community where diverse personalities and interests thrive—inside and outside the classroom. Becoming a Student At Large (SAL) on a USSU committee is a great way to get involved with your students’ union and contribute to making our campus a better place.

The USSU is governed by University Students’ Council; to aid Students’ Council, there are a number of committees that review issues in-depth and provide recommendations for action to the Executive. For more information regarding USSU committees, read the USSU Bylaw.

If any of the following committees are of interest to you, please submit an online application by 4:30 pm, September 17, 2019.

Know Your Rights!!

Come one and come all to Know Your Rights Week!!!! During one of the most thrilling weeks of the year, get ready to know YOUR student rights and responsibilities! The week is designed to provide you with valuable knowledge that will be useful going into midterm season! It is a collaboration between your USSU and Student Learning Services! 

 

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 23

  • The week kicks off with the start of a weekly series of posts on Facebook, and Instagram called, “Know Your Rights Mondays”! 
  • Student Learning Services Workshop: Digital Literacy and Your Digital Footprint
    • Are you information savvy when it comes to your digital literacy skills?  Attend this workshop to learn more about digital literacy and tips for managing your digital footprint.
    • Collaborative Learning Lab (Room 145), Murray Bldg: 12:30-1:30pm.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24

  • Face to Face: Join your USSU Executive in St. Thomas More by the Student Lounge! While you are there, try your luck at spinning the wheel of rights and responsibilities! Test your knowledge and have a chance to enter a draw! 

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25

  • Student Learning Services Workshop: What Is Academic Integrity, and What Do I Need to Know About It?
    • You have probably heard the term “academic integrity.” Your professors mention it on every syllabus and in class, and you may hear other students talk about it. Come to this workshop to figure out what all the fuss is about and learn how to do your work with integrity!
    • Collaborative Learning Lab (Room 145), Murray Bldg: 2:30-3:30pm. 

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26

  • Your Wallet? At Risk? Shining a light on Online Homework Systems and Open Educational Resources
    • What are Online Homework Systems and how are they integrated into your learning experience? How can Open Educational Resources help save you $$$$$? Come to this workshop, hosted by your very own VP Academic! This presentation is broken into two parts. One section aims at raising students’ awareness of what Online Homework Systems are, as well as the risks associated with them. The second half of the presentation will discuss strategies on how to approach your professors when asking about Open Educational Resources, and the benefits they bring to both students and instructors. FREE FOOD. 
    • Roy Romanow Council Chamber, Upper Place Riel: 2:30-3:30pm. 

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27

  • In Lieu of the Earth Climate Strike, there will not be any specific programming. Instead, make sure you attend the rally happening at City Hall at noon! Bring Signs and have your voice heard!

Take Back the Night

Saskatoon Women’s Community Coalition and USSU Women’s Centre presents Take Back the Night: An Annual March to End Violence in the Community on September 12th at the YWCA 510 25th Street East.

The evening will begin at 7:00 PM with a gathering at the YWCA and a presentation by Kendra Weenie. The community march will begin at 7:30 PM and there will be refreshments following the march and entertainment by Desiree Nieckar in the gym of the YWCA.

There will be a bus available for individuals that may not be able to walk the entire route.

Everyone is welcome! Dress for the weather and be prepared to make some noise.

Term 1 U-Pass Important Dates

August 12, 2019

Term 1 U-Pass can be activated or reactivated at the Information Centre in Upper Place Riel. Term 1 U-Pass allows you to access Saskatoon Transit September 1 to December 31.

* If you received your U-Pass in the past, you will be required to reactivate your U-Pass at the Information Centre.

August 12, 2019

Opt-Out applications may be submitted online to the USSU.

August 31, 2019

Summer Term U-Pass is deactivated at the end of the day. Term 1 U-Pass will be required effective September 1.

September 1, 2019

Term 1 U-Pass is active. If you have received or reactivated your U-Pass for Term 1, you will be able to access Saskatoon Transit with your U-Pass.

September 17, 2019

Last day to apply for Term 1 Opt-Outs. Completed online applications are due no later than 4:30pm.

December 31, 2019

Term 1 U-Pass is deactivated at the end of the day. Term 2 U-Pass will be required January 1.

Sexual Assault Awareness

Take Back the Night

Take Back the Night Sign Making Party

September 12,  12:00PM-3:00PM

Feeling creative? Are you interested on attending Take Back the Night, an annual march to end violence in the community on September 12th? Stop by the USSU Women’s Centre on September 12th anytime between 12:00PM-3:00PM to create a sign for the march. We’ll have lots of sign making supplies and inspiration, along with free snacks!

Saskatoon Sexual Assault and Information Centre Student Workshop

Participate in Sexual Assault Awareness week by attending a FREE student workshop focused around sexual violence and supporting survivors.

Would you like to learn more about the definition of sexual violence, receiving disclosures, consent and the law, the impacts of sexual violence on victims and survivors, and supports in Saskatoon? Join SSAIC (Saskatoon Sexual Assault and Information Centre) for a FREE workshop on September 13th from 1PM-2PM in the Roy Romanow Student Council Chamber in Upper Place Riel. Snacks will be provided!

The Graduation Students’ Association presents a free screening of the film “Audrie & Daisy” as part of the Sexual Assault Awareness Week 2019. Join us for the movie while you meet new friends and establish contacts with the campus community. The screening will take place at the GSA Commons on September 17th at 5PM.

Bringing in the Bystander Training

September 18th 12:00PM-1:30PM

Bringing in the bystander is a 90-minute workshop that uses real-world examples, skill and empathy-building activities, and role-playing scenarios that equip participants with the skills and knowledge to make a difference at the community level by addressing elements of rape culture.

Participants learn about a spectrum of harmful behaviours that constitute sexual violence and methods of interrupting sexual violence safely when it is occurring or likely to occur.

USSU Welcome Week Presented by SaskTel

If you’re on the University of Saskatchewan campus September 4-6, you better not miss USSU Welcome Week, the biggest party on campus! And YES, there will be Mini Doughnuts provided by SaskTel in front of Place Riel all three days!!

Celebrate back to school with the USSU! This year we have Food Trucks, Beer Gardens, Bands, DJs, Pancake Breakfast, Ping Pong, the Carless Drive-In, and tonnes of fun taking place in the Bowl including student groups and lots of free giveaways to students, including the USSU Executive handing out the USSU Survival Calendar.

USSU Welcome Week festivities begin at 11:00 am each day in the Bowl with food, beer gardens, bands and DJs playing throughout the day. Thursday will host the pancake breakfast from 7am-10am and Carless Drive-In, featuring Hocus Pocus starting at 8pm, in the Bowl. Nom Nom, Güd Eats, Smokes Poutine, and Boryski’s will be in the Bowl all week for students to enjoy.
